Armor or Slingshot?

Armor or Slingshot?

Trying to be still as the day begins, my mind is taken to the Bible passage in Ephesians 6 about our need to "put on the full armor of God."

Let me be clear.... I am not attempting to discount or discredit that admonition. Yet my thoughts went in a different direction.

There are days lately when I find myself feeling vulnerable, inadequate and often weary. We all have these times in our lives.

Today the thought of putting on all those pieces of armor tired me. That's just honest, and I'm thankful that with days such as these, I have God's permission to question, express doubt, debate and dialogue freely with Him.

I thought of David and all that heavy armor King Saul "clothed him with."(1 Samuel 17)

David told Saul he couldn't walk with it on and that he had not "tested them." I will have to put some additional thought on what is meant by testing one's armor.

I can see the need for all of those pieces of spiritual armor, especially when in a vulnerable and perhaps emotionally exposed state. And yet, the energy to gather and put it on today isn't there.

So like David, I'll consider gathering some smooth stones for a slingshot instead.

David collected five stones.

And interestingly we know that it only took one stone to take down Goliath.

One.

I suppose armor is important for protection. But maybe today I need just one smooth stone.

I'm at the brook, trusting God to help me choose which ones.

And perhaps the very first one will take down a taunting giant today.

Like David, we can be sure God is on our side in the battles.
